I've finally completed my first pallet project. I've been eying the pallet 'pins' for the longest time but haven't mustered up the courage to grab one. My husband and I had the morning alone one rare occasion and we drove past a nursery. We stopped for some other things and I finally asked the owner if he had any spare pallets. He gave me an odd look and told me I could find some salvageable ones by the garage. My poor (and easy going) husband just looked at me and went with it.
That's why I love him!

We loaded the heavier than I imagined pallet in the back of our car and drove away. I knew I'd have to start working it in ASAP or it would end up collecting dust. After changing clothes, we laid out the pallet, took out the circular saw- yes ladies I used it! and began sawing away. I'm so happy with my pallet sign and am pumped I have enough to make 2-3 more. I'm thinking I'll focus them around the holidays for our mantel.
If you're in doubt about a pallet 'pin' I encourage you to just do it!

1. Admire the pallet you now have in your possession :)
2. Laying the pallet down flat, make your lines for where you'd like your cuts.
REMEMER to ALWAYS use protective eyewear when using the saw.
3. Lay out the pieces of pallet panels in the order you prefer. I personally like the imperfections of the wood so wasn't too worried about perfect dimensions.
4. Taking two pieces of scrap, screw wood screws through the back scrap. Make sure to measure the thickness before buying wood screws. You'll want to measure the pallet and scrap together.
5. After all the pallet panels are secure, sand any rough sides.
6. Wash the wood with soap and water. Let it completely dry either in the sun or a warmer area.
8. Start painting.
9. Let dry overnight.
10. Enjoy your new piece of decor!

ReplyDeletePallets are surprisingly heavy! The sign looks great! I'm so jealous you have a circular saw; I had to pull my pallet apart with a crowbar and cut it with a handsaw when I made my bath shelf. :-) Thanks for linking this up to The Fun In Functional!
